Mykola Tomenko: Yanukovych will have a hard time proving his legitimacy to society
"Even the most optimistic exit polls don’t give Viktor Yanukovych a relative majority of votes. There is no figure of 50%, and so he should forget about a magical victory. Being in opposition, our opponents were unable to convince even a relative majority of the people of their ideas. Even if we assume a small difference not in our favor, 16 oblasts plus Kyiv voted for Yulia Tymoshenko, while only 10 oblasts plus Sevastopol voted for Viktor Yanukovych - that is just slightly over one third of all oblasts. This is a big problem, because it means a great strain on the public legitimacy of such a President," Mykola Tomenko said on Channel 5.
Mykola Tomenko also noted that the myth that Yulia Tymoshenko's opponents Viktor Yanukovych will win by a 15% margin has been destroyed. "This myth has been destroyed, and moreover there will be another sociological segment, and it will show the results of voting in the period from 7pm to 8pm."
He stressed that it’s important to wait for the results from the final two hours of voting, and only then can decisions be made about further actions.
"It all depends on whether we can be certain that the elections were fair and democratic. The guarantee of fair and democratic elections in the event of our defeat is recognition of our defeat. Confirmation of fraud and abuse – to give us the opportunity in a legal way to prove possible violations."
He drew attention to the fact that the Central Election Commission's results are official, not the exit polls.
