Lawyers: Yulia Tymoshenko’s conviction is a disgraceful page in Ukraine’s legal history

pr_b1297_1_.jpgYulia Tymoshenko’s lawyers have said the judge ignored all evidence of the ex-premier's innocence when handing down a guilty verdict in the criminal case against the her.

“The uniqueness of this conviction is that most of it was dedicated to explaining why the judge didn’t accept the defense’s arguments. The part referring to alleged evidence of guilt was much smaller than the part in which the judge justified why he doesn’t accept the defense's position, even though there was far greater evidence of Yulia Tymoshenko’s innocence than guilt,” lawyer Yuriy Sukhov told journalists.

He added that Yulia Tymoshenko’s lawyers will file an appeal. “The appeal must be filed within 15 days after we receive the ruling. We hope that we will get it today and will file the appeal shortly,” he said.

“If the appeals court considers the defense’s appeal in an independent manner, then there is hope and much reason to expect that this verdict will be overturned. If we don’t find an understanding with the appeals court, then we will go further,” lawyer Oleksandr Plakhotnyuk added.

Yuriy Sukhov also said that Yulia Tymoshenko will be held at the Kyiv prison pending the decision in the appeal.

“Today’s ruling by the Pechersk Court, handed down by Judge Kireyev, will undoubtedly go down as a shameful page in the history of Ukraine’s legal system because this decision criminalizes political decisions and runs contrary to the laws and current Constitution,” lawyer Mykola Siryi added.
