Court postpones Yulia Tymoshenko’s appeal for political reasons (video)

freedom-for-yulia.jpgLawyer Serhiy Vlasenko believes it’s not by chance that the next hearing in Yulia Tymoshenko’s cassation appeal was scheduled for August 16.

"The authorities are trying to speed up the case in Kharkiv and delay the case in the High Specialized Court in order to create additional obstacles on the way to the European Court of Human Rights, which is scheduled to consider Yulia Tymoshenko’s complaint on August 28. The second aim fulfilled today was to create legal obstacles for Yulia Tymoshenko’s participation in the country’s political life," said Serhiy Vlasenko.

The ex-premier’s lawyer pointed out that the deadline for party lists and candidates for deputies to parliament in constituencies is in August. "Understanding this, the authorities are artificially, without any basis, postponing the consideration of Yulia Tymoshenko’s appeal," he said.

"The situation in absurd. Regardless of the opinion of the forensic medical examination, which is illegal, the main thing is Yulia Tymoshenko’s will to be or not be present at the cassation process. She expressed her opinion three times - Yulia Tymoshenko wants the appeal to be considered in her absence," stressed Serhiy Vlasenko.

The lawyer also believes that today’s decision to postpone the appeal is evidence that Ukraine is turning into a police state. "When law enforcement dictates how someone should exercise their rights, it’s an absolutely clear criteria of a police state. When the prosecutor’s office, not a citizen, decides what to do if a right is granted under the Constitution - this is a sign of a police state," he added.

Захист Юлії Тимошенко не помилився

Today, for the third time, the High Specialized Court postponed their consideration of Yulia Tymoshenko’s appeal despite her repeated requests that they proceed in her absence.
