Another resolution introduced in U.S. Congress calling for release of political prisoners in Ukraine

kaptur.jpgU.S. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) has submitted to the House of Representatives a resolution condemning the persecution of political opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko as well as other political prisoners, among them former Internal Affairs Minister Yuriy Lutsenko.

"The House of Representatives demands the Government of Ukraine immediately release all political prisoners as well as provides proper medical care to all those that have been imprisoned; and demands that Ukraine adhere to the principles of democracy and rule of law by respecting human rights, freedom of the press, and the protection of free speech and the right to assemble peacefully," reads the resolution, which was referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The resolution also notes that world governments have lambasted the decision against Yulia Tymoshenko calling it politically motivated and questioned Ukraine's commitment to democracy and rule of law.

On September 22, 2012, the U.S. Senate approved a resolution submitted by U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe and co-sponsored by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin that called upon the U.S. Department of State to introduce sanctions against Ukrainian officials responsible for the political prosecution of Yulia Tymoshenko.

"The Senate calls on the Department of State to institute a visa ban against those responsible for the imprisonment and mistreatment of Ms. Tymoshenko and the more than dozen political leaders associated with the 2004 Orange Revolution," says the resolution.

The Senate also called for the Government of Ukraine to release Yulia Tymoshenko and to provide her with timely access to medical care. The Senate also expressed deep concern that the continued detention of Yulia Tymoshenko would threaten to jeopardize ties between the United States and Ukraine.
