Serhiy Vlasenko: regime looking for a scapegoat for Donetsk killings in the 90s (video)

pr_b1928.jpgLawyer Serhiy Vlasenko says that Ruslan Shcherban, the son of murdered MP Yevhen Shcherban, can’t act as a witness in the case concerning his father’s death.

"Ruslan Shcherban, when speaking publicly, never accused Yulia Tymoshenko of any illegal actions. He said that he heard something, that he’s guessing, that he’s assuming. But when asked directly, he answers in the negative. So it’s impossible to say that this person can be a witness of something. He can probably be the same kind of witness as Mykola Azarov in the ‘gas case’ and give explanations in court – in other words, be a witness to nothing," said Serhiy Vlasenko.

The lawyer also referred to statements by MP Hennadiy Moskal regarding charges that Ruslan Shcherban killed someone while hunting earlier this year. "This person is totally dependent on the Prosecutor General’s Office, and will give evidence of anything so as not to end up in jail himself," he said.

"I don't think a person whose life depends on the Prosecutor General’s Office, who for 15 years was silent about his father's death, who during the 2003 murder trial in Luhansk gave comprehensive, complete, and, hopefully, objective explanations and when questioned in court didn’t name names, can be a witness in this case," underlined Serhiy Vlasenko.

The lawyer believes this is an attempt by country's leaders to find a scapegoat for killings in Donetsk in the 1990s. "There is a famous Latin phrase – who benefits? The death of Yevhen Shcherban was to the benefit of only one person. And this person’s name is Viktor Yanukovych, whose political career began to grow rapidly immediately after the murder of Yevhen Shcherban, a man who really influenced the development of the Donetsk region," he said.

“Take a look at who got the property that belonged to Yevhen Shcherban? It went to Yanukovych and his business partners. That’s why now he’s trying to shift responsibility for the bloody showdowns in Donetsk in the mid and early 1990s onto someone else. I don’t think he will succeed. It’s absolutely clear that he was the only one interested in this murder,” stressed Serhiy Vlasenko.
