Yulia Tymoshenko: our duty is to protect the memory of the Holodomor victims (video)

pr_a9230.jpgDear compatriots!

On this mournful day, we remember the millions of countrymen who were condemned to death by starvation only because they were Ukrainian.

The Holodomor of 1932-1933 was a horrible crime by the Stalinist regime against our people and one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century. Trying to break the Ukrainian people’s eternal desire for freedom, the Soviet leadership chose the most terrible form of punishment – execution by artificial famine. Special food confiscation brigades swept across Ukraine like the plague, leaving behind suffering, despair and death.

Experts have determined that Ukraine lost nearly 4 million people from death and more than 6 million unborn from the Holodomor. The ruthless hand of famine touched virtually every village and every family. Our people paid too high a price for the desire to be the masters of their own land. To this day, the memory of the terrible famine in Ukraine is an unhealed wound, an inexhaustible pain, an unforgivable crime.

We are deeply grateful to the dozens of countries around the world that have officially recognized the Holodomor in Ukraine as an act of genocide and condemned it.

It’s unfortunate that our country’s current leadership denies that this was genocide, and in doing so is desecrating the memory of the millions of victims of the Holodomor. This isn’t just a violation of the country’s laws, it’s a violation of universal norms of morality.

But the people’s inherited memory is stronger than the immorality of politicians. Neither the previous decades of censorship and concealment, nor the anti-Ukrainian propaganda by the current government will prevent the nation from preserving the memory of this tragedy, understanding its real causes and making correct historical conclusions.

Our duty is to preserve the memory of all our brother and sisters that were doomed to starvation by the totalitarian regime.

I ask that tonight you light a candle in your window as a symbol of memory and grief.

We ask the Lord in his Kingdom to take care of the souls of the millions of innocent Ukrainians that were killed. May their memory unite us and strengthen our love for our neighbor and country.

Yulia Tymoshenko
