Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko believes now is the time for society as a whole, with the participation of intellectuals of all institutions, to develop a new people’s Constitution that will protect the rights and freedoms of the country’s citizens.
“Why do we want it to be developed by the people? Because all previous changes to the Constitution, the new Constitution in 1996, were adopted behind the back of the people, behind the scenes. People never participated in the development of rights that they want. That is why now is the time. We need to work together – all of society, intellectuals from all institutions – to develop a new people’s Constitution,” believes Yulia Tymoshenko.
In her opinion, a new Constitution should be adopted through a national referendum instead of in parliament, where “part of the mafia that people have been fighting for many years sits.”
“That way officials will not be able to control people and dictate how they should live, and instead will be appointed by society and responsible to society. We need a Constitution as a Bible that is impossible not to follow and that will really change our life,” said Yulia Tymoshenko.
According to the head of the Batkivshchyna Party, neither elections nor revolutions that changed the faces of those in power succeeded in changing people’s lives. Therefore, citizens themselves must now write and adopt their own Constitution with rules according to which the state will live.
