A new gas transit contract has not been concluded because the government wants to bankrupt the GTS

Batkivshchyna Party Leader Yulia Tymoshenko says the current Ukrainian government has not effectively negotiated a new contract for the transit of Russian gas to Europe through the Ukrainian GTS because of intentions to bankrupt the profitable GTS for its future “black privatization.”

“The government should have started the negotiation process a year before the contract for the transit of Russian gas to Europe ended. The contract has ended but negotiations have not started yet,” Yulia Tymoshenko said on the talk show “Pulse” on channel 112 Ukraina.

According to the politician, this inactivity by the Cabinet of Ministers shows that the government is “artificially bankrupting the profitable Ukrainian GTS, which under the slogans of energy sector reform they plan to transfer to the management of unknown global investors.”

The parliamentarian also said that the success of the Ukrainian GTS requires that a transit contract be concluded for the supply of gas from the Russian Federation to Europe and that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline not be allowed to function as it will leave the Ukrainian gas transportation system without full gas volume. In her opinion two things are needed:

“First, LNG terminals should be built in the Odesa and Mykolaiv ports, liquefied natural gas brought in by sea and then through regasification alternative natural gas should be loaded into our system and supplied to Europe through our GTS,” she said.

Secondly, in her opinion, international investment in needed to develop the gas fields in Ukraine.

“Ukraine has explored 960 billion cubic meters of gas. High-speed deep drilling technologies allow a well to be started in 2-3 months. This will allow us to supply gas to the Ukrainian GTS and we can become competitive, including with regard to Russia, for the supply of our natural gas to Europe,” said Yulia Tymoshenko.
