Yulia Tymoshenko, candidate for President of Ukraine and Leader of the Batkivshchyna Party, is convinced the dismissal of Zurab Alasania as director of the National Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine is connected with the elections and is an attempt by current President Petro Poroshenko to control the media space in order to secure a second term in office.
“According to various sources, Alasania was dismissed because he did not show the Congress of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc Solidarity and because the channel has investigative journalists who can tell society some of the truth,” Yulia Tymoshenko said in Poltava during a meeting with local editors and journalists.
In her opinion, this is a flagrant violation of freedom of speech.
“The fact that this is being done so boldly during the election campaign shows that the president will cross all lines in order to secure a second term,” she added.
The Head of the Batkivshchyna Party is convinced that the president and his entourage are preparing to falsify the election, not only by suppressing freedom of speech and usurping television channels, but also other methods.
“It is sad that 5 years after the Revolution of Dignity there is large-scale crushing of even those small sprouts of democracy that were achieved through the very hard work of civil society and opposition political parties,” Yulia Tymoshenko said.
