Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko says that critically low living standards are forcing Ukrainians to emigrate, with close to 6.5 million Ukrainians leaving the country for work – a dangerous figure.
“Emigration and the drain of professional and skilled labor from Ukraine is reaching critical levels. According to various estimates, from 6 to 6.5 million Ukrainians have left the country in search of work and that’s where they start new lives. This is tragic!” Yulia Tymoshenko said on channel NewsOne.
According the parliamentarian, people are leaving for places such as the US and EU because of higher salaries.
“The average salary in Ukraine is 237 euros, while in Germany and the US it’s 16 times higher, in Italy 13 times, in Poland 4.7 times,” said the head of the Batkivshchyna faction.
“Tell me, won’t successful and smart people, who can’t give their children a good education in Ukraine or get medical treatment for themselves, their children and parents, who can’t be sure their food and air is safe, who are paid 16 times less but pay world prices for utilities – won’t they leave?” the politician said.
Yulia Tymoshenko stressed that to stop the flow of human capital out of Ukraine we need to “return the country to the Ukrainian people” and “improve living standards.”
“Even salaries in neighboring countries such as Romania, Lithuania and Hungary are three times higher. This is why people are leaving Ukraine. Those on top make billions while people on the bottom have been deprived of the right to work and live,” the parliamentarian said.
