March 9 is the birthday of Taras Shevchenko.
So much has been said and written about Shevchenko that any thought is repetitive. But he still remains a mystery…
The true Shevchenko is something different than the canonical national poet whose portrait is adorned in embroidered towels, something more modern…But what?
That is the phenomenon of Taras. He is forever inviting us to learn, search, act.
I remember the late 1990s, early 2000s. Taras Shevchenko Park. Opposition meetings and rallies. Shevchenko, as I now understand, was a participant of that process. As deserving of a true intellectual, he is always in opposition.
He inspired and supported us, even if we weren’t aware of this.
Shevchenko is very modern. And not only are his words relevant to Ukraine today. Shevchenko’s poetry is not just words, it is energy, action, movement… That is why his “Kobzar” is never out of date…
They are only two words, but his “Fight and you shall overcome” embody everything…
Happy Birthday, great Poet of Ukraine!
