Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko believes that returning peace to Ukraine and having a strategy for restoring Donbas should become priority issues for the country’s intellectual elite.
“Ukraine needs peace like it needs air. The war has become a screen to cover up the government’s corrupt and senseless policies that are making several people very rich. This is what is holding back the peace process today and not allowing us to conduct real talks,” Yulia Tymoshenko said during the Forum “A New Course for Ukraine” in Kyiv.
The politician believes that parallel to the processes taking place on the basis of the Minsk format, there should be a return to the Budapest memorandum after the presidential election.
“I know how and with whom to negotiate peace. Someone’s business projects making money on blood or the backroom deals being made today won’t get in my way,” the parliamentarian said.
Yulia Tymoshenko stressed that “we must think about Donbas not as occupied territory, but as Ukrainian land,” and remember the 2 million refugees “who sought protection and their future in Ukraine” and in doing so refuted the myth of a “pro-Russian Donbas.”
Yulia Tymoshenko believes that the road to de-occupation includes a UN peacekeeping mission on Ukraine’s terms.
“We have to start thinking today about creating international funds for the restoration and development of Donbas, how to return the life of those people who found temporary shelter in unoccupied territory. In any case, we also cannot forget about those who gave their health and lives on the fronts fighting the aggressor,” Yulia Tymoshenko said.
“No Ukrainian can be calm until Crimea and Donbas are returned to Ukraine,” Yulia Tymoshenko said in her response to questions from Forum participants.
