Today the US Senate passed a unanimous resolution, the first ever in the history of the American Congress, recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
This is a very important and timely decision. Ukraine has a great and also tragic history. The Holodomor is one of the blackest pages that will never be flipped over and forgotten.
Such things as recognizing the Holodomor as genocide is not only a tribute to the memory of the innocent people killed, not only the world’s mourning of our horror, this is also a historical marker. This is recognition of Ukraine as a separate, independent nation that has suffered as a result of its struggle for the right to be free on its own land.
And it is very important that this decision was made now – at a time when Ukraine is again fighting for its independence and sovereignty and is defending itself from the aggressor.
The world has not forgotten about us and not left us on our own.
I know that many people, including representatives of our diaspora, have worked hard for many years for this decision of the Senate to be possible. I sincerely thank all those involved.
Glory to Ukraine!
