Leonid Kadenyuk’s life was abruptly cut short today.
Everyone knows him as Ukraine’s first astronaut, but few realize that Leonid Kadenyuk’s flight into space in 1997 was a symbol not only of the achievements of Ukrainian astronautics, but a symbol of the emergence of an independent Ukraine – a young country with great potential and talented people.
He gave us hope for a successful future in a special country.
He gave us reason to be proud of Ukraine – and this meant much more than a space flight.
We worked together with Leonid in the Verkhovna Rada of the fourth convocation, and I was always amazed and glad that despite his celebrity, he remained a modest and intelligent man, a decent and pleasant person to talk to.
It is painful that Leonid’s life was taken so suddenly and so early.
We will cherish his memory.
Together with the entire Batkivshchyna team, I express my sincere condolences to the family of Leonid Kadenyuk.
