Batkivshchyna faction leader Yulia Tymoshenko says that solving social problems must come before economic reforms in Ukraine.
“The government is reporting a budget surplus. We did the math and if there is a budget surplus because they are taxing pensions, then better to not have this kind of surplus. Index pensions and salaries and then move on to reforms,” Yulia Tymoshenko said today on Ukrainian Radio.
In her opinion, every government is legally required to index social payments to the inflation rate. “According to the law and Constitution, every government is required to index pensions and salaries. This government hasn’t done so for two years. This isn’t up to the good will of the government – it’s required by law,” the Batkivshchyna faction leader said.
“Prices have risen, there’s inflation – this means that there should automatically be indexation, an increase in salaries and pensions according to the inflation rate,” she said.
Yulia Tymoshenko also stressed the need to abolish the pension tax. “We are the only country in the world where the government taxes pensions. The 15% tax for working seniors must be removed,” the Batkivshchyna leader added.
