The country’s leadership must take control of the investigation into the murder of human rights activist and lawyer Iryna Nozdrovska and inform the public daily on its progress, Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko has said in a statement.
“Unfortunately, the killing of Iryna Nozdrovska is a consequence of the fact that state law enforcement works to serve its political bosses not to protect citizens’ safety,” the Batkivshchyna leader believes.
“This terrible tragedy will become a judgment of the whole law enforcement system, a system in which family and connections matter more than the law and murder is seen as the easiest way to get rid of an opponent,” Yulia Tymoshenko said.
She believes the country’s leadership must do everything possible to ensure a swift and transparent investigation and that those responsible, regardless of their status, be punished fairly. This is the only honest way to preserve what remains of public trust in law enforcement.
“Real judicial reform means citizens are confident the courts are fair and punishment is unavoidable. But when a lawyer is killed because she got the court to convict her own sister’s killer, this is a return to the gangster days of the 90s,” the politician believes.
“The investigation and punishment of the perpetrators in this case is a test for the authorities. If they do not pass, will there be law enforcement, can there be free speech, will our lives and that of people close to us be safe?” she said in the statement.
Yulia Tymoshenko expressed condolences to the family of Iryna Nozdrovska on behalf of her party.
“We will do everything we can so that this woman’s killer is found and punished,” said the Batkivshchyna leader.
