Yulia Tymoshenko, presidential candidate and Batkivshchyna Party Leader, says if elected she will review the tariff policy, lower gas prices, demonopolize the import of gas, attract investors and prosecute corrupt officials.
“Factoring in infrastructure expenses and 30% profitability, the price of gas should be 3.5 hryvnias per cubic meter, not the 8.5 hryvnias today. This is not only dishonest, it is deeply corrupt and absurd from an economic point of view. The new president should lower gas prices,” Yulia Tymoshenko said on the program “Main Topic. Choice” on channel Ukraina.
The politician said her recent court victory against the government is “the first step to setting correct prices for gas, heat and hot water.”
She also said she will dismiss the corrupt members of the state utility regulatory agency and appoint professionals. She will also sell gas of Ukrainian extraction to the population.
Yulia Tymoshenko stressed that there is no gas market in Ukraine, that prices are set by the regulatory body on terms of monopoly supply. Demonopolizing gas import will ensure a real gas market.
“This will immediately lower the price of gas by $100,” she said.
Yulia Tymoshenko also said that investors should be allowed to extract and trade Ukrainian gas, and all those involved in corruption in the gas sector should be held accountable.
When asked about writing off the 55 billion hryvnias the population owes for utilities, she said that the debt is so high in part because of high consumption norms for those without gas meters.
“We will recalculate norms so that we do not overcharge people for utilities,” she said, adding that meters should be installed at the expense of gas suppliers.
