The Verkhovna Rada has supported the initiative of Batkivshchyna faction leader Yulia Tymoshenko to make MP Nadiya Savchenko a member of the permanent Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and to appeal to international institutions to help secure the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia.
The Verkhovna Rada resolution to appeal to the European Parliament, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, UN and International Committee of the Red Cross was supported by 321 of the 371 MPs registered in the session hall.
The Ukrainian parliament is urging them to use all possible measures to secure the release of Nadiya Savchenko, director Oleh Sentsov, leader of the Ukrainian National Assembly Mykola Karpyuk and other citizens of Ukraine that were captured as a result of Russia’s military aggression, illegally transported to Russia and are being held there against their will.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to inform all national parliaments of foreign states, international organizations and interparliamentary assemblies about the content of this appeal.
During the Dec. 22 parliamentary coordination council, Yulia Tymoshenko called for Nadiya Savchenko to be included in the Ukrainian delegation to PACE and for an appeal to be sent to international institutions asking them to help free Ukrainian citizens held captive in Russia.
