The Verkhovna Rada has supported the initiative by Batkivshchyna faction leader Yulia Tymoshenko to appeal to the Russian Duma and president of Russia urging them to use all possible means to free Ukrainian pilot and MP Nadiya Savchenko along with all other Ukrainian citizens that were captured during the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, unlawfully taken to Russia and are being held there against their will.
According to the decision, which received 321 votes of the 349 MPs registered, the Verkhovna Rada calls for the release not only of MP Nadiya Savchenko, but also director Oleh Sentsov, leader of the Ukrainian National Assembly Mykola Karpyuk and other citizens of Ukraine that as a result of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine were captured, illegally transported to Russia and imprisoned.
The Verkhovna Rada also instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to inform the parliaments of all foreign states, international organizations and interparliamentary assemblies about changes to this appeal.
Nadiya Savchenko was illegally taken to Russian in early July and wrongly accused of the murder of Russian journalists. On November 27, 2014 she was sworn in in absentia as a member of the Ukrainian Parliament of the VIII convocation from the Batkivshchyna faction.
Following her election to parliament, Nadiya Savchenko is to be made part of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which will give her special diplomatic status that should be grounds for her release from prison.
