Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko is against the proposed Steinmeyer Formula because she considers it a surrender and betrayal of Ukraine’s national interests. She believes a “Ukraine formula” should provide for the restoration of the state border between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, complete demilitarization of the occupied territories, renewal of the laws of Ukraine and the return of IDPs to Donbas, and only then elections under the control of the Ukrainian authorities.
“The Steinmeier Formula means holding elections in the occupied territory without peace, without borders, without withdrawing troops and without returning people. This is unacceptable. It will be a betrayal and a surrender,” Yulia Tymoshenko said on the program “Right to Power” on channel 1+1.
The politician explained that under the present format of the Steinmeier Formula, the occupied territory of Donbas will “permanently have special status,” and Ukrainian authorities will be formed in national elections conducted “under the muzzles of tanks in occupied Donbas” and under the influence of the Russian Federation.
“This is no longer the return of the occupied territories, it is essentially the seizure of political power in Ukraine by the Russian Federation, and it will not only be about the Donbas and Crimea,” she warned.
Yulia Tymoshenko explained that instead of the Steinmeier Formula, the President and Verkhovna Rada should develop a “Ukraine Formula” which, in order to resolve the military conflict in the Donbas, will foresee, first and foremost, the implementation of security measures.
“The first condition is the reconstruction with the help of the international community of our territory and restoration of the state border between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Ukrainian border guards should be standing on the state border,” she said, adding that in this context we must not forget about Crimea.
The second condition, according to the politician, should be the complete demilitarization of the occupied territory.
“This means that the occupiers’s troops and gangs must be removed from the territory of Ukraine, along with heavy, light and other military equipment. Because how can elections be held under the muzzle of tanks, and how can they be fair?”asked the parliamentarian.
The third requirement, according to the Head of the Batkivshchyna Party, is the return of Ukrainian law and Constitution in the occupied territory. The fourth is the return of temporarily displaced persons to their homes so that they can vote.
“People should vote, not tanks. IDPs, who are in fact refugees, must return to their homes and be able to elect local authorities. Elections can take place only if these four conditions are met … and only then will it be possible to say that it is not surrender and not treason,” Yulia Tymoshenko said.
