State program needed to support farming in Ukraine

Batkivshchyna faction leader Yulia Tymoshenko says the current government is not directing any efforts to support farming, which should be a priority for the country, and that the next government should develop a strong program to support the sector.

“We need to cancel the draconian taxes and introduce a single tax on land, and also provide affordable long-term loans at 3-5% interest for at least 5-10 years,” Yulia Tymoshenko said on the program “Podrobytsi Tyzhnia” on the Inter channel.

According to the parliamentarian, there needs to be a strong farming movement and appropriate conditions for the development of agrarian enterprises that include necessary legislation and a state program.

“As soon as the government changes, we need to develop a strong agricultural program to support national farming,” she said, explaining that in neighboring Poland there are more than 2.6 million farms, compared to only 30,000 in Ukraine.

“Our job is to do no worse than Poland,” she said.

Yulia Tymoshenko also recalled that the Batkivshchyna Party together with representatives of farming organizations had succeeded in getting parliament to extend the moratorium on the sale of farmland, as society had demanded.

“The sale of agricultural land in Ukraine will destroy the last national resource we have, and after that there will be nothing with which to raise the country,” the politician said.

Yulia Tymoshenko also explained that villagers who want to sell their land plots should be given the right, but that the mechanism should only allow the land to be purchased by the state at market value.
