Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko believes Ukraine needs a fundamentally new strategy than the one followed by the currently government led by President Petro Poroshenko. She said the situation with Mikheil Saakashvili is an example of how the ruling government is destroying its political opponents, including its own citizens, which is unacceptable for a democratic European state.
“You are talking about strategy of political alliances, and I’m talking about a fundamentally different strategy of life in the country, when a strategy of destruction must be replaced with a strategy of prosperity and an action plan with 10 points that can give us a fundamentally new life. We need to unite with the citizens of Ukraine and introduce a proper strategy,” Yulia Tymoshenko said during the program “Svoboda Slova” on channel ICTV.
The politician said that today it is critically important for representatives of the democratic opposition to “not fight against each other” but to “defend those who are being destroyed.”
“That’s why we were at the border with Saakashvili. Because I know what the destruction of an opposition leader is. And I think that if we do not learn to defend each other and jointly protect people, then we won’t be able to bring anything good to the country,” explained the parliamentarian.
According to Yulia Tymoshenko, today the issue is not about Mikheil Saakashvili, but that “the government machine that has not changed and behaves the same way with every citizen of Ukraine.”
“Today, every Ukrainian can’t find the truth in the government’s policies or reforms. And Saakashvili can’t find the truth. Does anyone actually believe that he was stripped of Ukrainian citizenship because he filled out documents incorrectly?” she asked the audience.
Commenting on the situation at the Shehyni border crossing, Yulia Tymoshenko emphasized that the events took place in Ukraine, when the border had already been crossed. And when Mikheil Saakashvili “was not allowed to show his passport and documents, which is a violation of the law,” people were outraged by such illegal actions.
“Nobody knew what people on the Ukrainian side, driven to despair, would do. But you can’t blame people for going out to protect their rights,” she said.
Responding to a question about the border crossing, Yulia Tymoshenko said the government is speculating on the fact that the deputies crossed the border in violation of border rules.
“What is my motivation, as a people’s deputy with a diplomatic passport, to cross the border illegally? Are there criminal cases opened against me, over which I am afraid to enter the country? No! And I will never run away from my own country. Have I been banned from entering my home country? No! Then why would I cross the border without registration? This is absurd. People are being brainwashed,” she explained.
Yulia Tymoshenko emphasized the need for democratic pro-European opposition forces to work together to oppose the destructive policies of the current government.
“If the country doesn’t have a strong and democratic pro-European opposition, then the country won’t exist. What the government is doing today is a direct threat to the state of Ukraine and the existence of the Ukrainian nation,” the parliamentarian concluded.
