Ukraine’s GTS belong to the people, not corrupt politicians

Yulia Tymoshenko, head of the Batkivshchyna faction, says the Ukrainian gas transport system (GTS) belongs to the people of Ukraine and that any attempts by the current government to privatize it are unacceptable. The politician has urged deputies to support Batkivshchyna’s initiative to introduce mechanisms that would prevent any manipulations with the GTS.

“I appeal to all deputies, if politicians who were given power by the people have even a drop of conscience left, we must urgently pass a bill that prohibits any manipulations with the GTS. Batkivshchyna is preparing a corresponding draft law,” Yulia Tymoshenko said while addressing parliament.

The politician recalled that in 2007 the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law with 430 votes that was introduced by the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and prohibited the alienation of property of Naftogaz and Ukraine’s GTS. According to her, the law prohibits any manipulations with Naftogaz property.

“This law prohibits any and all manipulations with the GTS: leasing, rent, privatization, corporatization. Because this property has a political nature and is a priceless economic treasure,” she said.

Yulia Tymoshenko also said that today “absolutely fraudulently amendments were adopted” and now Naftogaz CEO Andriy Kobolyev “has started the process of transferring management of the GTS.”

“Who gave Mr. Kobolyev the right to dispose of national property, and who gave him the right behind closed doors to deprive Ukraine of its most valuable asset? Moreover, they are considering now only transfer of concession, but actual ownership to another state,” she warned.

The head of the Batkivshchyna faction explained that the gas transport system is a strategic natural resource that requires 300 billion euros for upgrades. She said Ukraine’s GTS is a resource that “can give the economy a major push.”
