Batkivshchyna is calling on President Volodymyr Zelensky to initiate an all-Ukrainian referendum on opening the land market and the Verkhovna Rada to pass a law on holding a referendum on public initiative.
“Based on President Volodymyr Zelensky’s election campaign, I appeal to him on behalf of the Batkivshchyna Party, requesting that an all-Ukrainian referendum be held to see whether there is public support among Ukrainians for selling land at auction,” Yulia Tymoshenko said during a press conference in Kyiv.
The politician said that Batkivshchyna analyzed the farmland bill that was registered in the Verkhovna Rada and made comments. In her opinion, if the law is adopted “during a war, occupation and annexation, 42 million hectares of agricultural land, which makes up 72% of the territory of a sovereign and independent Ukraine, will be sold, including to persons with dual citizenship and foreigners through enterprises with Ukrainian registration.
“If this law is passed in parliament, and foreigners are permitted to buy agricultural land, it will mean a new colonization of Ukraine,” she warned.
At the same time, Yulia Tymoshenko stressed that there is currently no mechanism for holding a national referendum, and that is why Batkivshchyna has developed a corresponding bill and proposes that the government immediately consider it and adopt it as a law.
“If the President wants, he can, by the end of today, make this bill a priority to be considered by the Verkhovna Rada,” she said.
The Batkivshchyna Party leader said that her party also registering another bill that effectively bans the sale of agricultural land without a decision by the Ukrainian people through a referendum.
“The decision to sell agricultural land can be made solely on the basis of an all-Ukrainian referendum and solely on the basis of the decision of the Ukrainian people,” Yulia Tymoshenko said.
