Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko met with Senator Tom Cotton, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, during which the parties discussed the escalation of the Russian war against Ukraine, in particular the recent events in the Kerch Strait, and the implementation of martial law in Ukraine.

Yulia Tymoshenko informed the American lawmaker about the position of the Batkivshchyna Party that to ensure the political process elections must be held and the restriction of the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens prevented. She also thanked Senator Cotton for co-sponsoring a resolution condemning the aggression against Ukrainian naval ships.

The senator noted Yulia Tymoshenko’s principled position on the defense of democracy and freedom in Ukraine.

In addition, the politicians exchanged views on specific steps that the United States Administration and the Senate could take in the near future to strengthen the support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in particular the Naval Forces.

Yulia Tymoshenko called for strengthening sanctions against Russia and expressed the view that the Minsk agreements were necessary but not sufficient to establish a stable peace in Ukraine. The Batkivshchyna Leader stressed the need for negotiations in the Budapest Plus format with the leaders of the signatory states of the Budapest memorandum and the involvement of the EU High Commissioner and German leadership.

At the end of the meeting, the senator wished Yulia Tymoshenko success in implementing her plans aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, strengthening Ukraine’s sovereignty and democracy.
