The Resistance Movement is an organized volunteer movement of patriots of Ukraine who responded to Batkivshchyna leader Yulia Tymoshenko’s call to defend Ukraine’s borders from the Russian aggressor.
The Resistance Movement assists the army in defending Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The army was severely weakened under the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych.
Yulia Tymoshenko announced the creation of the Resistance Movement on April 30, 2014 and by mid-May nearly 20,000 patriots from across Ukraine had signed up.
In May 2014 the 34th territorial battalion “Batkivshchyna” was created in the Kirovohrad oblast. Its 421 members vary in age and most have professional combat and peacekeeping experience in various countries of the world. The Batkivshchyna battalion underwent a two-month training and is now fighting pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.
Another battalion – Resistance Movement – is finilizing its training and its 644 fighters are ready for combat.
The Resistance Movement volunteer battalions operate in accordance with Ukrainian law and are territorial defense batallions of Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“I believe in this volunteer army. I believe that it will help defend Ukraine. We have to focus on our defense and all the resources and capacity of our country. We have to defend our borders,” Yulia Tymoshenko said.
